Lower Town

Lower Town, situated just north of downtown and nestled along the Huron River, is an integral part of the greater Northside neighborhood. It offers a convenient location, providing residents with walkable proximity to downtown, the University of Michigan Hospital, and both UM campuses. Located just across the Broadway Bridge, residents enjoy local eateries, shops, scenic river trails, and a peaceful residential community. The neighborhood also features many bike lanes and easy highway access to US-23 via Barton Drive.

Lower Town holds historical significance as one of Ann Arbor’s first settled neighborhoods. Originally a separate village, it became incorporated into Ann Arbor in 1867. This area is home to some of the city's oldest structures, such as the Anson Brown Building, dating back to 1832. Alongside the river and railroads, old mills and industrial buildings contribute to the neighborhood's rich historical tapestry. Established local businesses in the area include the Northside Grill, Sic Transit Cycles, Plate Sushi & Chicken, and Broadway Cafe.

In recent years, the area has seen a surge in new developments and businesses. Some notable additions include Lowertown Bar and Cafe, the Beekman on Broadway apartments, the upcoming Orange Market, and the revitalization of an older retail center. Additionally, construction to revitalize a 14-acre riverfront site at the end of Broadway, known as Broadway Park West, will begin in the spring of 2024. The project will create a new park, residential areas, commercial spaces, and a hotel.

The neighborhood provides a diverse range of housing options — from newly constructed luxury apartments to historic single-family homes dating back to the 1800s. Many well-preserved mid-19th-century architectural gems add character to the area, creating an eclectic and charming array of building types and landscaping.

Students residing in Lowertown attend highly-ranked Ann Arbor schools, with most students progressing to Clague Middle School and Skyline High School. Elementary students attend the highly-rated Ann Arbor STEAM at Northside (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), fostering an environment where students 'engage, communicate, collaborate, create, and think critically.'
