Celebrate Halloween in 9 Fun, Family-Friendly Ways

We’ve put together this list of fun, family-friendly Halloween events going on throughout Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County, many of which are low-cost or free. So, gather up your friends and loved ones and get outside this weekend to enjoy the beautiful fall colors and festivities. Friday, October 28

“Macbeth”: Huron High School Players

7:30 p.m. 

Oct. 28 & 29 and Nov. 4 & 5. Students perform one of Shakespeare’s best-known and most influential tragedies, the bloody tale of a Scottish lord and his ambitious wife.

Halloween Concert: EMU Symphony Orchestra

8 p.m. 

Kevin Miller conducts this music student orchestra in a program of spooky music for all ages. The audience is invited to come in costume.
8 p.m., EMU Pease Auditorium, W. Cross at College Place, Ypsilanti. Tickets $10 (students & seniors, $8; kids age 12 & under, $6) in advance

Fall Festival: The Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms

The Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms Fall Festival is a fun event for families. There will be cider, donuts, hayrides and special activities.

Halloween Skate: Ann Arbor Parks Department

1-2:30 p.m. 

Skating to spooky music programmed by a DJ. Costumes contest with prizes.
Veterans Ice Arena, 2150 Jackson Rd. $6 (youths age 17 & under and seniors age 60 & over, $5). $1 discount for residents. Skate rentals available ($3). 761-7240.

5:30-7:30 p.m. 

Get ready for a spooktacular time at the Humane Society of Huron Valley! This event will include family friendly activities throughout the shelter that will leave your kids smiling and their treat bags full of goodies!
Activities include:
Games
Trick or treating
Crafts for the animals
Pictures with “Happy the Hound”
Meet and greet some of our adoptable animals
…and much, much more!

All ages welcome
$10 per child (ages 1 and up) payable online. Adults free!
Pre-registration at www.hshv.or/muttstermash required.
Tickets are available for either a 5:30pm, 5:45pm, 6:00pm. 6:15pm or 6:30pm arrival time. Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before your scheduled arrival time.

Register for this event early as this will sell out. Your name will be held at the door for check in. No tickets will be mailed to you.

“Animal Haunts Halloween Walk”: Leslie Science & Nature Center

6-8 p.m. 

Guided hikes through the Black Pond woods to meet a variety of costumed animals who perform entertaining, educational skits and songs. Followed by a hay jump, pumpkin carving, face painting, cider, and more. All encouraged to come in costume

“Ghoultide Walking Tour”: Chelsea Area Historical Society Free!

7 & 8:30 p.m. 

CAHS member Jasen King leads walking tours through Chelsea’s historic railroad corridor and downtown to point out and discuss ghost and murder stories associated with various places along the way.

19th Annual Family Halloween Party: U-M Natural History Museum Free!

Noon-5 p.m.

The museum sports haunting decor, spooky effects, and even some live critters in this family-oriented party that features a costume contest, trick-or-treats, and many hands-on science-oriented activities. Costumes encouraged.

“2nd Annual AADL Costume Contest”: Ann Arbor District Library Free!

12:30-3:30 p.m. 

Costume contest for all ages with an assortment of prizes. Judging begins at 12:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.
