Ann Arbor Parks and Nature Areas

Wurster Park is over 5.5 acres in size on Edgewood place between Madison and Third. It features an accessible asphalt path connecting activities, with new play equipment, open field play, a sledding hill, horseshoes, a picnic grill and tables, benches and a champion size oak tree on the natural registry of historic trees.

Cedar Bend Nature Area
19-acre park on the steep bank of the river where the waterway makes a sharp bend back to the south. Parking is available in the main lot accessible from Island Dr, and there is pull-off parking on Cedar Bend Dr. Facilities are available at nearby Island Park and there are picnic spots along the river near the main parking area. Trails are unpaved, leading up (or down) the steep slope, and also travel a ridge of the slope. Another trail option is a rough unpaved one-way road which winds through the park from Cedar Bend Dr. to Island Dr. Ann Arbor

Allmendinger Park
8-acre park located on Pauline between Hutchins and Edgewood. The park contains softball fields, a restroom facility and water fountain, a play area nestled in an Oak and Hickory grove, picnic tables, a tennis court, grass volleyball court, and basketball court. There is limited parking off Pauline Street. An accessible asphalt path connects the play area, picnic area and restroom facility.

Arboretum Nature Area
34 acres within the University of Michigan’s 123 acre Nichols Arboretum. Located between Geddes Rd. and the Huron River, there are entrances at Geddes Rd., Riverview Ct., Washington Heights, and the UM Medical Center lower lot (Lot M29) off Medical Center Dr. Parking is limited and often restricted at these entrances. The city owned portion is located on the west side of the Arboretum, near the Washington Heights entrance. The entire site is managed by the UM School of Natural Resources. Currently there are no restroom facilities at the Arboretum, although plans for an interpretative center will include them.

There are many trails winding through the hills and fields of the Arboretum. All are unpaved, some are wider and some have rustic stairs. The Arboretum has a restored prairie, open mowed areas, and riverside access with good examples of wet loving plants. The other woodlands support oak, ash and walnut among other trees. There is also a very famous peony garden which offers visitors a beautiful stroll in the spring.

Arbor Hills Park
6 acre park located in the Arbor Hills development. Access to this park is available from Bayswater Lane, north of the park or Burbank Drive, south of the park. Parking is available along those roads.

Argo Nature Area
22-acre linear park on the east side of the Huron River bordered by Broadway St., Longshore Dr. and Barton Dr. The Argo Canoe Livery is located in the park and is open for rentals from April - October. (Call 668-7411 for more information). Parking is adjacent to the canoe livery, and just north of there is a parking area with a boat launch. Both are located on Longshore Dr. A visitor may gain access to the trails from several points: from Riverside park, the northeast side of the Broadway bridge, near the dam and livery parking lot, on the north side of the boat launch parking lot (both off Longshore Dr.), and from Barton Drive.

Bandemer Park

new to the park system and is a natural area along the Huron River that is 40 acres in size. The park is accessed off North Main at Lake Shore Drive and off Barton Drive where it meets Whitmore Lake Road. The park features accessible trails through the main body of the park, restrooms, benches, accessible canoe dock, fishing deck, shelter, picnic areas and grills. Dirt foot paths wander throughout the site, with views of the river and other unique habitat prevalent. Brochures are available for this park. Ann Arbor

Barton Nature Area
102-acre park located along the Huron River on Huron River Drive, a few miles north of downtown. (Actually, the park is in two sections. The larger main section is known locally as the oxbow. The western section, 24 acres of the total, is accessible by boat from Barton Pond and is known as Foster.) The main parking lot is located on Huron River Dr, just northwest of Bird Rd, near Barton Dam. A smaller pull-off lot is located further east on Huron River Dr. near M-14. Bridges from the parking areas allow pedestrian access to the oxbow area. There is a picnic area and toilet next to the main parking lot.

Bird Hills Nature Area

147 acres and the largest park in the city. Its hilly woods are a sanctuary for hikers. The area is closed to bicycles. The park is bordered by Newport Rd. on the west, Bird Rd. on the north, Huron River Dr. on the east and M-14 on the south. A parking lot is located on Newport Rd. A small pull-off parking area is located on Bird Rd. Parking is also available in the Barton Nature Area lot near the Barton Dam. A trail starting just north of this parking lot across Huron River Dr., will connect you to the Bird Rd. trail head and the main part of Bird Hills. There are five trail-heads: at Down Up Circle (a private drive), at Bird Rd., at Beechwood Dr. and two start from the Newport Rd. parking area. No facilities are available in this undeveloped park. A brochure including a trail map is available at the kiosk at the Newport Rd. parking area (or at the Department of Parks & Recreation on the 6th floor of the Larcom Municipal Building - City Hall).

Black Pond Woods Nature Area

34-acre woodland on the north side of the city off Traver Rd. It is bordered by Leslie Golf Course on its east side, and it is located north of the Leslie Science Center. Parking is available in the Leslie Science Center parking lot. No facilities are available in this undeveloped park.

The unpaved trails can be reached from Tibbits Ct., the Arrowwood Housing Co-op, and from behind the Leslie Science Center - Project Grow gardens. The trails wind through the woods of oak, hickory, maple and dogwood. The spring wildflowers offer a terrific show. Black pond is a vernal or seasonal pond, and its murky waters support a variety of wildlife both terrestrial and aquatic.

Bluffs Nature Area

Ann Arbor’s newest city park acquisition. It’s 22 acres are located on a glacially formed ridge over North Main Street. Informal trails wind throughout the park and are accessible from North Main St., just across from Lakeshore St. on the southwest side of the street. The trail is somewhat covered by shrubs, but for the adventurous, it is worth the trip! There are no facilities at this undeveloped park.

Bluffs has a variety of natural features including an oak-hickory forest, wooded ravines, and an open field with remnant prairie species. There are also a few examples of large older trees including open grown oaks and a huge white ash. This area has long been a favorite place for bicycles, but hikers are sure to enjoy the rugged trails throughout the park.

Broadway Park

5 acres in size and located off Broadway along the Huron River. It connects to Riverside Park by an asphalt path and has a staircase to Broadway crossing under the bridge. It has mostly open field area with clusters of trees and shrubs and features a great stretch of river for canoeing. Ann Arbor
Brown Park

Brown Park is an 81.4-acre park with four entrances: one is located off Packard just east of Cobblestone Farm on the South side of the street, one at the end of Birch Hollow Road off Stone School Road, one at the end of Verle, and a pedestrian I-94 overpass entrance from Plainview Court and Braeburn Circle. There is limited parking at Packard and Birch Hollow. The park contains Ann Arbor’s only disc golf course that traverses the entire park. Brown also contains a play area with a very long slide, a basketball court, open fields, a neighborhood ball field, picnic tables, and benches. An unpaved trail meanders along Mallets Creek and through the woods and wetlands. An asphalt bicycle/walking trail connects to each of the activities and entrances. The pond, owned by the Washtenaw County Drain Commission, is a great area for wildlife viewing.

Buhr Park is a 39 acre park serving the south central part of town with softball diamonds, 2 tennis courts, play equipment, basketball court, open field play, sledding hill, picnic facilities with a grill, an outdoor pool with a family activity pool, and a seasonal ice rink. Parking lots are located near most activities. Buhr is connected to Cobblestone Farms and John Allen Elementary School.

Burns Park

Burns Park is a 15 acre neighborhood park on Wells and Baldwin adjacent to Burns Park School. It hosts a small shelter with restrooms and a drinking fountain, five tennis courts with a one half practice court, a basketball court, a sledding hill, ice skating rink and hockey rink in the winter, a small parking lot and play equipment to be renovated by spring of 1998. The park is the old site of the County fairgrounds. Remnants of the oval track can still be seen by the same shape tree planting around the interior of the park.

Clinton Park is a 4.82-acre park located on Stone School Road south of Eisenhower. The park contains a play area within circular retaining walls, basketball courts, tennis courts, softball fields, a small sledding hill, drinking fountain, picnic table, grill, and an accessible paved path connecting the courts and play area to the small parking area located on Stone School Road.

Cobblestone Farm

The Cobblestone Farm house, completed in 1845, was originally a two-family home. Benajah Ticknor, a U.S. Naval surgeon, and Heman Ticknor, Whig Politician and farmer, shared occupancy of this Classic Revival structure with their families. Being restored and interpreted to reflect its mid-nineteenth century appearance, the site provides a view of past rural life in Washtenaw County. Today the site is administered through Parks and Recreation Services with support from the Cobblestone Farm Association.

Cranbrook Park is a 16.13-acre park located on Oakbrook Drive with a second entrance on Main Street. The park contains a play area, half basketball court, picnic tables, benches, lots of large open field play, an accessible asphalt walking/bicycling trail through the park, a nature area with unpaved trails and a pedestrian bridge connecting to the Main Street entrance. Dhu Varren Woods Nature Area is a 13-acre park located off Dhu Varren Rd. on the city’s north side. The only parking available is along the road, so be sure to pull off the road as much as possible and be aware of traffic! There are no facilities in this undeveloped park. Trails are unpaved. There is also a small wetland that connects to the larger Foxfire South wetland area

Dolph Nature Area is a 57-acre park on the city’s west side, bordered by Wagner Rd. on the west, Jackson Rd. on the north and Parklake Ave. on the east. Parking is available in the main lot off Wagner Rd., or along the street on Parklake. Trails begin from various points from these two areas. No facilities are available here. There are benches throughout the trail system. All trails are unpaved and most are are narrow. A trail bisecting the park is wider. This park contains the only naturally formed lakes in Ann Arbor.

Ellsworth Park is a 4.21-acre park located on Ellsworth Road midway between Platt and Stone School Road. This park contains a playground, basketball courts, sun shelter, water fountain, field games area, picnic tables, and asphalt path connection.

Esch Park is a large neighborhood park, five acres in size, located off Fenwick between Packard and Eisenhower Parkway. This active park has two half basketball courts, a paved game court, tennis courts, play equipment (due for renovation by Spring 1998), a softball field, benches, a large open field for games and a drinking fountain. An asphalt path provides access to the area subdivisions and all activities.

Forest Nature Area

Forest Nature Area is a 17-acre woodland and wetland along the Huron River. The property is adjacent to Parker Mill Park (26 acres). Both are managed by the Washtenaw County Department of Parks and Recreation. Parking for Forest Nature area is available on Dixboro Rd. north of the railroad tracks. Follow the Gallup bicycle path east to the parks. Another parking lot is off Geddes Rd. Facilities are available near this parking area, when the mill is open. A picnic area is also available near the old mill buildings. The trails within Parker Mill and Forest Park spur from the bicycle path, but are only open to bicycle traffic. Some of these trails are unpaved. Others are part of a boardwalk system. An historic mill and other buildings are located at the northeast end of the park.

Foxfire North Park is an 11.2-acre park located on Dhu Varren Rd. at Omlesaad. The park contains open fields, a basketball court, and a play area.
Foxfire South

Foxfire South is an 19-acre natural area that contains habitat for locally uncommon butterflies such as the Acadian Hairstreak, which is found along streams and in wetlands where willows occur. The plentiful wetland wildflowers here provide nectar sources for these butterflies, and the Natural Area Preservation Program is restoring this area to improve habitat and reduce invasive species.

Foxfire West

Foxfire West is an 7-acre natural area that contains wetlands and a branch of Traver Creek. Adjacent to Olson Park, it provides an important habitat corridor for wildlife that depend on water, such as muskrat and ducks. It also hosts a variety of wetland wildflowers that support butterflies. The Natural Area Preservation Program is restoring this area to improve habitat and reduce invasive species.

Fritz Park is a 5-acre park off Pauline tucked away in a wooded area and contains a play structure, picnic shelter, picnic tables and barbecue grills. The park connects to Eberwhite School and Nature Area to facilitate a pleasant walk through the woods.

Fuller Park is a 60-acre recreation area located on Fuller Road and Maiden Lane. The park contains soccer fields that are scheduled by the Ann Arbor Soccer Association, a 50 meter outdoor pool, and a water slide, with restroom and locker room facilities. A concession stand operates in the summer when the pool is open. The perimeter of the park is the Huron River, with a pedestrian bridge connection to Island Park. The play area was designed and built by the community and is one of the largest in the City. There are picnic tables located near the play area, and parking both at the park and across Fuller Road. During the week this parking area is used by the University. An accessible asphalt path connects to the play area and pool facilities. Ann Arbor
Furstenberg Nature Area

Furstenberg Nature Area is a 37-acre park containing wetlands, woodlands, prairie, and oak savannah. It is located on Fuller Road just West of Gallup Park. The park can be accessed from Gallup Park via pedestrian bridge or from Fuller Road across from Huron High School. A half-mile paved trail loops through the park, and a granular trail goes through the prairie and woods, connecting to 1/4 mile of wetland boardwalk. Facilities include a paved parking lot, a restroom building, picnic tables, two wetland overlooks, benches, and interpretive signage. An interpretive brochure leads the visitor through a series of numbered posts explaining the natural ecosystems.

Gallup Park

Gallup Park is a 69-acre park and is Ann Arbor’s most popular recreation area. It is located along the Huron River and Geddes Pond with scenic walkways that traverse small islands with bucolic pedestrian bridges. The park contains two playgrounds, a canoe livery, picnic areas and grills scattered throughout the park, two picnic shelters, open field for play, and over three miles of asphalt trails that are popular for biking, rollerblading, walking and running. Two drinking fountains and many benches allow the park user to take respite from their recreational activities. There are four parking areas: one at the main entrance off Fuller Road, two within the park along the park drive, and one further southeast on Geddes Road.

Garden Homes Park is accessed off Franklin, Fulmer and Garden Homes Streets and is just over 11 acres in size. This park is nicely wooded with open lawn areas for various activities. Inter- connecting paths wind their way over 20,000 feet with two small asphalt plazas with lighting and benches. Garden Homes also features a large play structure off Franklin.

Greenview Park is a 25 acre park located on Scio Church Road at Greenview, adjacent to Pioneer High School. Access to this park is available from several points along Greenview Drive. Parking is also available along Greenview. This park has pleasant mowed paths, a pond, and open fields. A nice spot for viewing water fowl and butterflies.

Hansen Nature Area is located on the west side of the city off South Maple Rd. This 9-acre park has a beautiful woodland and an open field with a small play area. No other facilities are available here. Parking is usually available in the parking lot of Grace Bible church which is adjacent to the property.

Hunt Park was renovated in 1997 and features a great view of the City. This park is almost 7 acres in size and bounded by Sunset, Daniel and Spring Streets. With year round activities, Hunt has a new play area, small softball diamond, soccer/football field, a small shelter with restrooms and a drinking fountain, basketball court and tennis courts. Benches and picnic tables are located throughout with an accessible path to restrooms and play area off Daniel. A great sledding area is heavily used in the winter, along with informal cross country skiing.

Originally designed in 1922, Huron Hills offers golfers a fun and interesting 18-hole golf course noted for dramatic elevation changes and views of the Huron River. Huron Hills is a par 67, 5,071-yard golf course located along the Huron Parkway, adjacent to Gallup Park. Huron Hills is one of the few walking-only golf courses in Michigan. Huron Parkway Nature Area is a 19-acre park located east of Huron Parkway south of Huron River Drive and north of Washtenaw Ave. Braun Park, a county park, is located on the east side of the Huron Parkway Nature Area. Access to the park is from the sidewalk along Huron Parkway. Parking is available about a half-mile north at the Huron Hills Golf Course.

Kuebler Langford Nature Area

Kuebler Langford Nature Area is a 31-acre park immediately north of M14 where it is tucked into the sharp curve of Huron River Dr. Beechwood Dr. is part of the western border of the park. Camp Hilltop is north of the park and is private land. Parking is available on Beechwood and on the western shoulder of Huron River Dr. No facilities are available at this undeveloped park. Trails are unpaved and are accessible from the parking areas. These trails bisect the park from east to west and connect to trails in Bird Hills Park across Beechwood. A small spur trail is located on the north side of the park and is only accessible from Huron River Dr.

Lakewood Nature Area

Lakewood Nature Area is a 7 acre park on the west side of town, adjacent to Lakewood School. Access to this park is from Lakewood School, Lakeview Avenue, Sunnywood Avenue, or by a trail connecting to Dolph Nature Area. Parking is available at the school, along the roads, or in the Dolph Nature Area parking lot. Although Lakewood Nature Area is somewhat small, it is connected to several other parks through which park visitors can continue their hikes. This area is fairly hilly, with several streams and ravines cutting through the park.

Leslie Park is a 26-acre park located off Dhu Varren Road. The park contains two play areas, tennis courts, basketball courts, softball fields, a sledding hill with a great view over the golf course, picnic tables, benches and open fields. There is ample parking and a portable restroom in the summers. An accessible asphalt walking/biking path connects all of the activities.

The Leslie Science Center provides natural science and environmental education opportunities for youth and their families. The Center is situated on 50 acres of fields, woods and prairie in the heart of Ann Arbor. The education programs are outdoors, hands-on and discovery-based. Programs are offered for school groups, scouts, and the general public.

Leslie Woods is a 23-acre natural area located south of Leslie Golf Course and north of Upland Drive. Parking may be available on Upland Dr. One trail bisects the park between Upland and the Golf Course (although access to the golf course is restricted). This oak hickory woodland has some of the largest trees found within the parks. An intermittent stream travels trough the park. This natural area is undergoing restoration efforts by the staff and volunteers of the Natural Area Preservation Division, including prescribed ecological burns and removal of non-native invasive plants.

Mack offers public swimming and swimming programs in our 6 lane, 25 yard main pool and attached 30 ft. by 42 ft. children's pool. A ramp leading into the pool provides for easy accessibility. Our indoor pool allows you to swim, even if the weather is not "summer like", while our huge windows let the sunshine in on bright days.

Marshall Nature Area

Marshall Nature Area is a 79-acre park in the far northeast area of Ann Arbor, at the corner of Plymouth and Dixboro Roads. A small parking area is accessible off Dixboro Rd., just north of Plymouth Road. West from the parking area is an open oak grove (which was the former site of a house). Trails begin at the northwest corner of the oak grove. The trails through the park are unpaved and in some areas are narrow. Small sections of the trail traverse steep slopes. Otherwise, the terrain is gently rolling. Ann Arbor
Maryfield Wildwood Park

Maryfield Wildwood Park is a 4.55-acre neighborhood park between Westwood, Linwood and Maryfield. The park contains a nicely shaded play area, half basketball court, picnic tables and benches, posts for a volleyball court, a water fountain, and a neighborhood backstop with open fields. The park features a wooded ravine with a woodchip trail running through the center that connects to Wildwood Street. Ann Arbor
Meadowbrook Park

Meadowbrook Park is a 2.18-acre neighborhood park located at the end of 7th St. at the cul-de-sac. The Park contains a half-basketball court, a playground, benches, picnic table, and an accessible walk through the park connecting the activities from 7th to Northbroook.

Miller Nature Area is a 23 acre park located between Miller Avenue and Arborview Boulevard. Paths enter the park from Arborview and Miller, and parking is available along the road.

It is not hard to get lost on the park’s network of winding trails, so take care when hiking. The trails meander through old field remnants with many flowers and forested areas with some magnificent elm trees. This park is a good place for birders and butterfly enthusiasts during the spring and summer months.

Molin Nature Area

Molin Nature Area is a 7 acre linear park located off Packard Road at Kimberley Road. A pulloff is available for parking at Powell and Colombia Avenues, and a trail leads from the pulloff into the park.

The single trail through this park can be wet at times, so be prepared! At one time this was a open field, and park now consists of a series of thickets and openings characteristic of a secondary growth forest.

Northside Park is a 5.21-acre park located on the corner of Pontiac Trail and Taylor. The park contains a small tot play area, a community center, softball fields, water fountain, restrooms, and tennis court. The park is adjacent to Northside School, which contains a few larger play areas.

Oakwoods Nature Area

Oakwoods Nature Area is a 14-acre oak hickory woodland located off Green Road. Parking is not available on Green Road, although parking can be found along the residential side streets in the area. Although there are no official trails in the park, a small game trail does offer access through the woods. A pond and wetland in the natural area is a good spots for bird watching or listening for frog calls. This natural area is undergoing restoration efforts by the staff and volunteers of the Natural Area Preservation Division, including prescribed ecological burns and removal of non-native invasive plants.

Olson Park is going to be Ann Arbor’s next new exciting park. This 54-acre parcel is jointly owned by the City of Ann Arbor and the County Drain Commissioner. Located on the corner of DhuVarren Road and Pontiac Trail south of M-14, the site’s main feature is a pond that was constructed to manage storm water for the Northeast area.

Designed to provide a balance of opportunities, the site will preserve existing natural features, including the wetlands and woods, the creek and pond, while providing active recreational facilities, including soccer fields and game courts. The park will also feature a paved loop as well as improvements to the existing network of mountain bicycle trails.

A significant feature of the site will be the restoration of native plant communities.

Plymouth Parkway Park is a 6-acre park located at the split between Plymouth and Broadway. The park contains a playground, benches, picnic table, asphalt walk connection, and a stairway that leads to Traver Road. A creek runs along the northeast side of the site.

Riverside Park is off Wall Street with 15 acres bordering the Huron River. An accessible asphalt walk connects this park along the river to Broadway and features picnic tables and grills, newly renovated play equipment, a football field, softball diamonds and a small gravel parking lot. Ruthven Nature Area is a 21 acre park located northwest of the intersection of Huron Parkway and Geddes Road. Unfortunately, no parking is available adjacent to this park, however parking is available across Geddes Road at the Gallup Park boat launch. A trail enters the park from Geddes Road. This site is an excellent example of glacial terrain. This topography supports a diversity of ecosystems, including dry fields with sparse trees, and wetlands. Ann Arbor
Scarlett-Mitchell Nature Area

Scarlett-Mitchell Nature Area is a 25 acre park adjacent to Scarlett and Mitchell Schools and Mitchell-Scarlett Woods. Access to the park is from the schools’ parking lot, where parking is available. A trail through Mitchell-Scarlett woods connects to the city park. This park is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Scarlett-Mitchell Nature Area contains an old field, a diverse wetland, and a wooded area.

Scheffler Park is a 5.52-acre park located on Huron Parkway at Edgewood. The park contains many activities for a neighborhood park including a play area, volleyball court, half-basketball court, rollerblading/hockey court, picnic tables and grills, softball field, drinking fountain, and a portable restroom in the summer. Mallett’s Creek runs through the middle of the park with a pedestrian bridge connecting the two sections. Parking is located on Edgewood.

South Pond Nature Area is a 16-acre park located north of Huron River Drive and south of the Gallup Park bike trail, and the railroad tracks. The most visible part of the park is the pond to which Chalmers and Malletts Creek drain. There is access to the water from Huron River Drive. Across the pond is a piece of land that is a beautiful example of an oak savanna community. This natural area is undergoing restoration efforts by the staff and volunteers of the Natural Area Preservation Division, including prescribed ecological burns and removal of non-native invasive plants.

Southeast Area Park is a 26.5-acre park located on Ellsworth at Platt. This recreation area contains two play areas, lighted softball and basketball, soccer fields, picnic shelter, concession area, parking, drinking fountain, restrooms, picnic tables and benches. The park features recycled products, with the play area, picnic tables and benches constructed from recycled plastics, the basketball surface is fabricated from old athletic shoes, and the bleachers are from recycled aluminum.

Stone Park is a 5 acre park adjacent to Stone School, at the intersection of Packard and Stone School Roads. Access is from the school parking area.

Most notably, a large collection of archaeological artifacts has been collected from this area and is now housed at the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology. The artifacts include chipped stone tools, polished stones, and potsherds. Some wetlands are in this area, which support frog populations during the spring and summer.

Traver Creek Nature Area is a 5.09 acre park in North Central Ann Arbor, situated between the Leslie Golf Course and the Ann Arbor Railroad. This park can be accessed from Traver Road.

Trails through this park can be somewhat thick with vegetation, so be prepared with long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. A creek runs through the area, bordered by wetlands. The remainder of the park consists of prairie remnants and thickets.

A historic pergola is located at the Miller entrance. Some of the most beautiful Oaks are located in the middle of the park near the picnic area. The Willow trees mark the location of Allen Creek which is now in a pipe underground. Parking is off Chapin.

Arboretum Nature Area
34 acres within the University of Michigan’s 123 acre Nichols Arboretum. Located between Geddes Rd. and the Huron River, there are entrances at Geddes Rd., Riverview Ct., Washington Heights, and the UM Medical Center lower lot (Lot M29) off Medical Center Dr. Parking is limited and often restricted at these entrances. The city owned portion is located on the west side of the Arboretum, near the Washington Heights entrance. The entire site is managed by the UM School of Natural Resources. Currently there are no restroom facilities at the Arboretum, although plans for an interpretative center will include them.

22-acre linear park on the east side of the Huron River bordered by Broadway St., Longshore Dr. and Barton Dr. The Argo Canoe Livery is located in the park and is open for rentals from April - October. (Call 668-7411 for more information). Parking is adjacent to the canoe livery, and just north of there is a parking area with a boat launch. Both are located on Longshore Dr. A visitor may gain access to the trails from several points: from Riverside park, the northeast side of the Broadway bridge, near the dam and livery parking lot, on the north side of the boat launch parking lot (both off Longshore Dr.), and from Barton Drive.

Bandemer Park
new to the park system and is a natural area along the Huron River that is 40 acres in size. The park is accessed off North Main at Lake Shore Drive and off Barton Drive where it meets Whitmore Lake Road. The park features accessible trails through the main body of the park, restrooms, benches, accessible canoe dock, fishing deck, shelter, picnic areas and grills. Dirt foot paths wander throughout the site, with views of the river and other unique habitat prevalent. Brochures are available for this park.

Barton Nature Area
102-acre park located along the Huron River on Huron River Drive, a few miles north of downtown. (Actually, the park is in two sections. The larger main section is known locally as the oxbow. The western section, 24 acres of the total, is accessible by boat from Barton Pond and is known as Foster.) The main parking lot is located on Huron River Dr, just northwest of Bird Rd, near Barton Dam. A smaller pull-off lot is located further east on Huron River Dr. near M-14. Bridges from the parking areas allow pedestrian access to the oxbow area. There is a picnic area and toilet next to the main parking lot.

Bird Hills Nature Area
147 acres and the largest park in the city. Its hilly woods are a sanctuary for hikers. The area is closed to bicycles. The park is bordered by Newport Rd. on the west, Bird Rd. on the north, Huron River Dr. on the east and M-14 on the south. A parking lot is located on Newport Rd. A small pull-off parking area is located on Bird Rd. Parking is also available in the Barton Nature Area lot near the Barton Dam. A trail starting just north of this parking lot across Huron River Dr., will connect you to the Bird Rd. trail head and the main part of Bird Hills. There are five trail-heads: at Down Up Circle (a private drive), at Bird Rd., at Beechwood Dr. and two start from the Newport Rd. parking area. No facilities are available in this undeveloped park. A brochure including a trail map is available at the kiosk at the Newport Rd. parking area (or at the Department of Parks & Recreation on the 6th floor of the Larcom Municipal Building - City Hall).

34-acre woodland on the north side of the city off Traver Rd. It is bordered by Leslie Golf Course on its east side, and it is located north of the Leslie Science Center. Parking is available in the Leslie Science Center parking lot. No facilities are available in this undeveloped park.

Bluffs Nature Area
Ann Arbor’s newest city park acquisition. It’s 22 acres are located on a glacially formed ridge over North Main Street. Informal trails wind throughout the park and are accessible from North Main St., just across from Lakeshore St. on the southwest side of the street. The trail is somewhat covered by shrubs, but for the adventurous, it is worth the trip! There are no facilities at this undeveloped park.

Broadway Park
5 acres in size and located off Broadway along the Huron River. It connects to Riverside Park by an asphalt path and has a staircase to Broadway crossing under the bridge. It has mostly open field area with clusters of trees and shrubs and features a great stretch of river for canoeing.

Brown Park
Brown Park is an 81.4-acre park with four entrances: one is located off Packard just east of Cobblestone Farm on the South side of the street, one at the end of Birch Hollow Road off Stone School Road, one at the end of Verle, and a pedestrian I-94 overpass entrance from Plainview Court and Braeburn Circle. There is limited parking at Packard and Birch Hollow. The park contains Ann Arbor’s only disc golf course that traverses the entire park. Brown also contains a play area with a very long slide, a basketball court, open fields, a neighborhood ball field, picnic tables, and benches. An unpaved trail meanders along Mallets Creek and through the woods and wetlands. An asphalt bicycle/walking trail connects to each of the activities and entrances. The pond, owned by the Washtenaw County Drain Commission, is a great area for wildlife viewing.

Burns Park
Burns Park is a 15 acre neighborhood park on Wells and Baldwin adjacent to Burns Park School. It hosts a small shelter with restrooms and a drinking fountain, five tennis courts with a one half practice court, a basketball court, a sledding hill, ice skating rink and hockey rink in the winter, a small parking lot and play equipment to be renovated by spring of 1998. The park is the old site of the County fairgrounds. Remnants of the oval track can still be seen by the same shape tree planting around the interior of the park.

19-acre park on the steep bank of the river where the waterway makes a sharp bend back to the south. Parking is available in the main lot accessible from Island Dr, and there is pull-off parking on Cedar Bend Dr. Facilities are available at nearby Island Park and there are picnic spots along the river near the main parking area. Trails are unpaved, leading up (or down) the steep slope, and also travel a ridge of the slope. Another trail option is a rough unpaved one-way road which winds through the park from Cedar Bend Dr. to Island Dr.

The Cobblestone Farm house, completed in 1845, was originally a two-family home. Benajah Ticknor, a U.S. Naval surgeon, and Heman Ticknor, Whig Politician and farmer, shared occupancy of this Classic Revival structure with their families. Being restored and interpreted to reflect its mid-nineteenth century appearance, the site provides a view of past rural life in Washtenaw County. Today the site is administered through Parks and Recreation Services with support from the Cobblestone Farm Association.

Dolph Nature Area is a 57-acre park on the city’s west side, bordered by Wagner Rd. on the west, Jackson Rd. on the north and Parklake Ave. on the east. There are benches throughout the trail system. All trails are unpaved and most are are narrow. A trail bisecting the park is wider. This park contains the only naturally formed lakes in Ann Arbor.

Forest Nature Area is a 17-acre woodland and wetland along the Huron River. The property is adjacent to Parker Mill Park (26 acres). Both are managed by the Washtenaw County Department of Parks and Recreation. Parking for Forest Nature area is available on Dixboro Rd. north of the railroad tracks. Follow the Gallup bicycle path east to the parks. Another parking lot is off Geddes Rd. Facilities are available near this parking area, when the mill is open. A picnic area is also available near the old mill buildings. The trails within Parker Mill and Forest Park spur from the bicycle path, but are only open to bicycle traffic. Some of these trails are unpaved. Others are part of a boardwalk system. An historic mill and other buildings are located at the northeast end of the park.

Fuller Park
Fuller Park is a 60-acre recreation area located on Fuller Road and Maiden Lane. The park contains soccer fields that are scheduled by the Ann Arbor Soccer Association, a 50 meter outdoor pool, and a water slide, with restroom and locker room facilities. A concession stand operates in the summer when the pool is open. The perimeter of the park is the Huron River, with a pedestrian bridge connection to Island Park. The play area was designed and built by the community and is one of the largest in the City. There are picnic tables located near the play area, and parking both at the park and across Fuller Road. During the week this parking area is used by the University. An accessible asphalt path connects to the play area and pool facilities.

Furstenberg Nature Area
Furstenberg Nature Area is a 37-acre park containing wetlands, woodlands, prairie, and oak savannah. It is located on Fuller Road just West of Gallup Park. The park can be accessed from Gallup Park via pedestrian bridge or from Fuller Road across from Huron High School. A half-mile paved trail loops through the park, and a granular trail goes through the prairie and woods, connecting to 1/4 mile of wetland boardwalk. Facilities include a paved parking lot, a restroom building, picnic tables, two wetland overlooks, benches, and interpretive signage. An interpretive brochure leads the visitor through a series of numbered posts explaining the natural ecosystems.

Gallup Park is a 69-acre park and is Ann Arbor’s most popular recreation area. It is located along the Huron River and Geddes Pond with scenic walkways that traverse small islands with bucolic pedestrian bridges. The park contains two playgrounds, a canoe livery, picnic areas and grills scattered throughout the park, two picnic shelters, open field for play, and over three miles of asphalt trails that are popular for biking, rollerblading, walking and running. Two drinking fountains and many benches allow the park user to take respite from their recreational activities. There are four parking areas: one at the main entrance off Fuller Road, two within the park along the park drive, and one further southeast on Geddes Road.

Hunt Park was renovated in 1997 and features a great view of the City. This park is almost 7 acres in size and bounded by Sunset, Daniel and Spring Streets. Camp Hilltop is north of the park and is private land. Parking is available on Beechwood and on the western shoulder of Huron River Dr. No facilities are available at this undeveloped park. Trails are unpaved and are accessible from the parking areas. These trails bisect the park from east to west and connect to trails in Bird Hills Park across Beechwood. A small spur trail is located on the north side of the park and is only accessible from Huron River Dr.

Marshall Nature Area is a 79-acre park in the far northeast area of Ann Arbor, at the corner of Plymouth and Dixboro Roads. Trails begin at the northwest corner of the oak grove. The trails through the park are unpaved and in some areas are narrow. Small sections of the trail traverse steep slopes.
