Letter to the future owner(s) of 6850 Huron River Drive:
We hope you enjoy living here as much as the first three sets of owners have. The first owner and builder of this house lived here from 1975 to 1980 before moving to New York City. Over the years, we occasionally heard from him and he always expressed how much he missed living here. He sold the house to a friend who lived here with his family from 1980 to 1985 before moving to Birmingham, Alabama. Several years later they returned to visit the property, to see it again and allow their boys to explore in the yard and on the trails where they had played as young children. They also mentioned how much they loved living here, and missed the quiet beauty and privacy.
We bought the house in 1985 have lived here for almost 26 years. One of us worked at the university and the other for the Dexter schools. This location allowed both of us to be only a few minutes from work, and close to Ann Arbor's cultural and sporting events, restaurants and shopping. When we were home, we always felt like we were on vacation. Prime spots for running, canoeing and hiking were right outside of the door. While we were at home, we became more in tune with nature and the passing of the seasons. We became avid birders, watching and feeding the many species of birds that live near the river. Wild turkeys and deer were fun to observe. We fenced in the yard to give our dogs a safe place to play and enjoyed taking them to the MetroParks as well as Stinchfield Woods and the Pinckney Recreation Area. In the winter, we took up cross-country skiing on the many nearby trails.
It is particularly nice to be so close to Dexter Huron MetroPark. The park is on a beautiful stretch of the river and usually has just a few visitors at a time. It almost feels like you have your own private park!
Since 1985 we have added our own touches to the house. Snowfall is more fun to watch with a roaring fire in the fireplace insert. Three large decks make spending time outside enjoyable during the warmer weather. Large skylights over the great room make it seem like we are living up in the trees as we can see the tops of the apple and oak trees. The attached garage comes in handy in all seasons. The master bedroom addition we added in 2002 moved the laundry upstairs onto the first floor and added a jetted tub as well. Houseplants love he southern-facing exposure and flourish in the abundant sunshine.
Now that we have retired and are moving farther south, we will join the ranks of the former owners who loved and will miss this house. Enjoy it!
- Jeanne and Larry
